Jan. 3 recap: Morristown-Beard continues streak, Morristown comes back

Morristown-Beard 5, St. John Vianney 4

Cam Fernandez's goal early in the third period proved to be the difference in a back-and-forth game, as Morristown-Beard knocked off yet another Top 20 team in New Jersey with a 5-4 win over No. 11 St. John Vianney at Twin Oaks Ice Rink.


It marked Morristown-Beard's eighth-consecutive win after an 0-2 start.


After falling behind, 3-2 in the second, Tommy Matthews and D.J. Layden scored 28 seconds apart to give Morristown-Beard its first lead. St. John Vianney struck in the final seconds of the period to tie it up, before Fernandez's difference-making goal.


Matthews finished with two goals and two assists, while Andrew Low also scored for the Crimson (8-2). Fernandez and Layden each had a goal and two assists, while Nick Vantassell added two assists. Paul Detre made 14 saves in the win.


Morristown 4, Kinnelon 3

Harry Santen and Jack McKenna each scored twice to send Morristown to a 4-3 comeback win over Kinnelon at Skylands Ice World.


Kinnelon built a 3-1 lead in the second period on goals by Jared Fatzer, Joey Arnold, and Ilya Klevtsov. But Santen scored back-to-back goals, before McKenna scored the go-ahead goal in the third.


Morristown improved to 4-4-2, while Kinnelon dropped to 0-7-2.


Morris Knolls-Hills 7, Madison 1

Jason Kwestel recorded a hat trick to propel Morris Knolls-Hills to a dominant 7-1 win over Madison at Mennen Arena.


Dylan Idland also scored twice for Knolls-Hills, which improved to 5-3-2. Andrew Ryan had a goal and three assists, while Gehrig Eckoff added a goal and an assist. Nick Torres and Jason Moskowitz each chipped in with two assists, while Elliot Marken made 19 saves.


Johnny Hamwee scored the lone goal for Madison, assisted by Aidan Niceberg.


Randolph 4, Hunterdon Central 1

Randolph earned its second win in a row as it rolled to a 4-1 win over Hunterdon Central at Aspen Ice in Randolph.


Zach Gallo and Ben Yurchuk each had a goal and an assist, while Kyle Barbera and James Mattson each chipped in with a goal for the Rams (9-2-1). Gavin Einfeldt made 19 saves.


Jackson Liberty 3, Chatham 1

Chatham saw its three-game winning streak come to a halt on Friday with a 3-1 loss to Jackson Liberty on the road.


After it fell behind, 2-0, Ronan Curry cut the deficit to 2-1 with a third period goal. Jennifer Olnowich made 18 saves in the loss.


The loss dropped Chatham to 5-2-2.
