Feb. 10 recap: Randolph downs Seton Hall Prep, Vernon punches ticket to states
Randolph 4, Seton Hall Prep 2
If there was any doubt about who the top seed in the Public B state tournament should be, Randolph made it abundantly clear, as it claimed a 4-2 triumph over Seton Hall Prep, which is ranked No. 6 in the state by NJ.com.
Randolph trailed, 2-1 in the second period, but Evan Xhumba and Matt Rogers each found the back of the net before the end of the period to give the Rams the lead for good. Nick Gallo added a power play insurance tally in the third period, while Kyle Barbera also scored a goal.
The win improved Randolph to 16-2-4, and was the team's final game prior to the state tournament cutoff. Gavin Einfeldt made 27 saves in the win.
Vernon 11, Sparta-Jefferson 1
Vernon officially punched its ticket to the state tournament with a dominant 11-1 win over Sparta-Jefferson at Skylands Ice World.
Dylan Shea had four goals and two assists for Vernon, which upped its record to the .500 mark at 11-11, which is enough to qualify for the Public C state tournament. Ayden Steinbach tallied two goals and four assists, while Evan Steinbach (1g., 4a.), and T.J. Santaita (2g., 3a.) all filled up the scoresheet. Carlie Van Tassel and Devan England each added goals in the win.
Ozzie Deluca made 16 saves for Vernon.
Pope John 2, Robbinsville-Allentown 1
Matiss Bars made 42 saves in goal to help backstop Pope John to a 2-1 win over Robbinsville-Allentown.
Lucas Buchanan and Alex Buchanan each scored for Pope John (5-16-1), with Alex's power play goal in the third period proving to be the difference.
